Eye problems can occur at any age but they are generally a part of the aging process, with regular examination from a trained professional such eye problems can be detected and even cured to give you a problem free life. Here are a few of the most common:

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye problem which is difficult to diagnose and their early symptoms are subtle, and even in some cases not caught, glaucoma causes heavy pressure on the eye itself. This pressure causes optic nerves to damage over time, and the problem caused due to this is that peripheral vision is damaged and decreases over time and even causes blindness. While the problem glaucoma, cannot be cured it can be treated if caught early. The solution to such problems is many including prescription eye drops, laser surgery and traditional surgery which can slow the disease and help preserve vision. The problem is that if the vision is lost it cannot be regained.

Macular Degeneration

While the main difference between Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration is that the vision starts chipping from the edges in Glaucoma and during the later the problem start affecting the vision right from the center of the eye. Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in India and it starts with the degeneration of the light-sensing cells at the center of the retina in the back of the eye. The key to curing this disease is early detection, and it can be cured using vitamins, injections and laser surgery to cure the defect. New research has even proven that stem cells can be useful in treating macular degeneration. The age when it is most dangerous is over the age of 50 and the people who are most at risk, are ones who smoke, have high blood pressure and cholesterol which have been shown to increase a person’s likelihood of developing the disease.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Millions of people have diabetes in India, which means that a major chunk of this population is at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, which is a disease which affects the blood vessels in the retina. This is a top cause of blindness in America, the damaged or abnormal growth of blood vessels can leak blood or fluid into the eye, causing blurred vision. A laser procedure called scatter laser procedure can help alleviate this problem by burning thousands of holes in the retina to help remove the abnormal growth which had taken place. While it might affect the night vision or peripheral vision, the procedure has been found effective in maintaining or restoring primary central sight.
